On May 15, 1916 in Waco, a prosperous town of 30,000 often called "the Athens of Texas" because of its three colleges and numerous churches, one-third of its citizens gathered on McLennan courthouse lawn to stab, beat, hang, and burn Jesse Washington to death.

Washington, a farm laborer, was arrested only three hours after Mrs. Lucy Fryer, a fifty-three year old Robinson mother of three, was raped and beaten to death. He was found with blood on his person and clothes. He was immediately taken to the McLennan County jail. The sheriff realizing the gathering mob might storm the jail, moved his prisoner to Hillsboro, some thirty-five miles to the north. Later, Washington was moved even farther away from the threatening mob to Dallas. Men in the crowd left home with the encouragement and blessings of their wives to 'do their duty." They compared themselves to the patriots at Lexington and Concord. Washington was brought to trial and had several young lawyers for his defense, although apparently he had little to do with preparing for trial. The case was presented to the jury and after a four minute deliberation, Jesse Washington was found guilty. The sheriff slipped from the courtroom to allow what he knew was to take place. Washington was dragged into the street where a chain was placed around his neck.

According to one source, "he became a plaything of the crowd." Washington was cut by knife wielding men and was bloody before the mob reached the square. Along the way, flammable materials such as boxes and timbers were picked up for a bonfire. Washington was dragged to a tree where he was hauled up by the chain. When Jesse tried to hold the chain, his fingers were cut off. Several men held him, castrated him and passed his "manhood" around the crowd to cheers. Parts of his body were taken for souvenirs. "According to one report, children were occasionally even given these relics to play with and show their friends." Washington was beaten and cut more, then placed on the gathered material. People rushed forward to be the first to light fire. As Washington tried to escape, the crowd pulled back over the flames. The Waco mayor and Chief of Police watched from the mayor's office. Fred Gildersleeve had been advised the best place to set up his camera. The photos were for sale and, perhaps, the mayor was getting a "rake-off" from the sales. School children on their way home for lunch watched the event.

Washington's body was left to smolder, but the crowd searched for pieces of flesh and bone to sell. Links of the chain sold for twenty-five cents. While the crowd watched a rope was placed around Washington's neck and he dragged around Waco until his head came off. His remains were placed in a sack, taken to Robinson where it hung in front of a shop. Eventually a sheriff's deputy returned it to Waco where it was buried in a potter's field.

Ok..i wake up at 3.00 am cuz too excited 2 go pyramid liao..like small kid liddat dunno why=.=”..swt then sleep again at 4,30 and wake up 2 dota at 7.30 liddat…okok lah…then go eat breakfast at sri melur jaya..dun care lah juz eat nia cuz later goin 2 pyramid d wad..then,go home faster get ready hp,bag,n bla crap stuff then go bath...manatau suddenly my sis wana go pyramid wif her fwen aso...then she go bath then dun letme go take my glasses at the toilet ther..Stupid...then she make me dam blardy late adi cuz I actually shud reach ther b4 yen yi n steph they all reach ..manatau reach the rte latest pula...11.15 I tink 0.0” thx 2 my smart sista...c2pid like mad..reach ther..hans go buy starbuckz milkshake 0.0” the milkshake is like so dam dam dam expensive then she summore belanja wan yee..wootZ then I saw yen yi and steph,shu ying they all walking towarDz starbuck..i run to them lah…after hans and wan yee bought their milkshake we walk here walk ther waiting 4 11.45 to go to redbox lah duh...we guyz wanted to watch memoirs of a geisha..manatau Stephanie shu ying and jia huey dun wan I tink ..not sure..but steph really dun wan lah..then me n yen yi walk to the cinema the show is at either 2.45 (when we are in red box)or 5.45..so we decided not to watch…then went to redbox sing like crazy pplz…yen yi and wan yee start dancing and I laugh non stop …then we starting to jump here jump ther lah..dam nice!!! Then got the small sofa infront of the tv..i go jump at it…then manatau suddenly fell down ..terkena the drinkZ at the table…lucky I din die or sumthin liddat lah..we actually play the lose my breath(destiny childs) video for 2 times cuz nice 2 dance mah!karaoke non stop not that syok..WootZ time in red box pass dam gao fast..2.15 haiz blardy bill 4 red box cum liao …rm 18 lah not bad...then after that we went to bowling ..SHU YING 1^ST BALL STRIKE!!..WOOTZZZ..geng…my bowling sifu…but make her memalukan quite sum timez lah..masuk long kang the ball…me n wan yee and hans play…WAN YEE WIN..geng man!! I will win u sumday !!! I notice I not bad in bowling wan..TRAIN more…saw han yang and his gang at bowling centre aso..the han yang fella bowling pro..siao wan..cemburu giler ><…ok after bowling me wna yee and hans WANA WATCH MEMOIRS of geisha..so we goin to buy the ticket…in the end almost everyone of us wanted to watch…5.45 show…haiZ but yen yi kenot go…she phone her mum and her mum yell at her 0.0”…sesated…her eyes dat time turn red leh!! ..ksianZ..haiz..then after that wan yee n yen yi went to shoppin ..me n hans very semangat archer since the last time we play..so we ma go archer ther..reach ther…bought 50 arrowz..STUPID..alot ppl ther..not enough arrow..we waited dam long..stil not enough arrow..our movie startin liao..so in the end din play return and get bac our money…duh..then went to find wan yee they all lah.. sesat gila ..phone them they say they at ROMP manatau I heard to BOMB pula…then cnt find the place then I phone shu ying , she say near S.U.B ther reach ther they all at roxy ther..omgz lah me n hans leg is like so dam pain =.+”…we went to watch d movie and we went bac lah..kena nagging by my mum cuz reach home so late…swtz….the end of our day..
